The Challenge

FLX Local Media acquired Finger Lakes Daily News in January 2026 with strong editorial momentum but minimal technical SEO infrastructure. Huckabuy was brought in to design and lead the technical strategy across structured data, indexing, page speed, and monitoring.

The objective was to build durable SEO systems that could scale at newsroom speed: strong indexing controls, complete structured data coverage, reliable Core Web Vitals, and operational resilience under sudden demand spikes.

Implementation Led by Huckabuy

This work focused on technical infrastructure. No AI-generated articles. Huckabuy defined architecture and priorities while AI-assisted engineering accelerated execution.

January 2026

Acquisition + technical baseline

Huckabuy established a roadmap spanning structured data, indexing strategy, performance optimization, and monitoring.

February 2026

Schema and indexation rollout

Sitewide schema implementation launched and syndicated sections were moved to noindex to concentrate authority signals on original reporting.

March-April 2026

Performance hardening under load

Page speed and caching upgrades were in place before severe weather events, allowing the platform to sustain peak traffic conditions.

Structured Data Architecture

Implemented schema coverage across news, organization, FAQ, video, and supporting entity types from WordPress source data.

Indexation Strategy

Noindexed syndicated sections to reduce crawl waste and improve topical quality signals for local-first reporting.

Core Web Vitals Work

Removed heavy client-side bottlenecks and tuned caching, image delivery, and script loading patterns for mobile-first performance.

The Syndicated Content Problem and Fix

FLX Local Media reported that syndicated sections were producing significant impressions but weak engagement. Huckabuy recommended noindexing those sections so crawl budget and ranking signals could focus on original local journalism.
